However, this can change depending on how wide the steps are. With wider steps, you may need to shorten the distance between them.
For outdoor decks, step lights often work best installed on the riser and spaced about 3 to 4 feet apart horizontally. This allows for more lighting along the length of the stairs, which boosts safety at night.
Do you need step lights on every step?
For traditional staircases, avoid putting step lights on every step as it can oversaturate the area and make it too bright. Instead, try alternating every other step or every 3-4 steps.
With wide steps, it can be beneficial to add multiple step lights to the riser of every step. They should be spaced evenly apart to allow for proper light distribution.
