What is the difference between a cfl and an LED bulb?

When comparing LED bulbs to traditional fluroescent or CFL's, there are several things to consider: 

  • LED Light Lifespan: LED bulbs can last up to 34 years or about 25,000 hours. CFL's, on the other hand, will only last about 14 years or 10,000 hours.
  • Energy Efficiency: LED bulbs are 83% more energy efficient than incandescent light fixtures, while CFLs are only 75% more energy efficient than incandescent light fixtures.
  • Lumens Per Watt: LED bulbs are the most energy efficient option for your light fixtures. They can offer the same lumen output using less power than traditional incandescent bulbs. For example, a 20W LED bulb will provide the same 1,600 lumens to a 100W incandescent bulb. CFL's are similar in their lumen to wattage ratio. To achieve the same brightness of 1,600 lumens, you would use a 23W CFL bulb.
  • Mercury: Unlike CFL's, LED bulbs DO NOT contain mercury, making them safer to handle when broken.

Are the bulbs dimmable, and if not, is there any way for them to be compatible with dimmers?

While many LED bulbs are dimmable, not all of them are compatible. A common misconception is that any LED light can be dimmed with an LED dimmer. This, however, is not the case. The driver must be deisgned with dimming properties. What are the average operating temperatures for LED bulbs?

In a normal environment, LED lights can produce a heated temperature between 68°F and 25°F. Unlike incandescent bulbs that emit 90% of its energy in the form of heat, LED bulbs generate very little heat.
