What is an LED BR light bulb?

BR stands for 'bulged reflector,' which refers to the bulb shape. You can also find R, or 'reflector,' bulbs included along with BR light bulbs. They include a reflective coating on the inside of the bulb.

LED bulbs offer a more energy efficient alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs use a higher wattage which means they use more power. An LED bulb offers a lower wattage, like this 8W LED BR30 bulb that replace a 65W bulb. Over time, this helps save you money on your energy bill!

HomElectrical carries two sizes of Sylvania LED BR bulbs: BR30 and BR40, as well as an R20 bulb.

What is the difference between PAR bulbs and BR bulbs?

While PAR and BR bulbs are similar, they offer a few distinct differences.

PAR stands for parabolic aluminized reflector. These lamps give off concentrated, or more focused, light. PAR LEDs shoot a narrow beam angle that makes them good for security lighting.

BR lamps emit a less concentrated light best used in recessed can lighting and track lighting.

How do you choose a BR bulb?

BR bulbs, like other light bulbs, come in a variety of wattage, lumens, CRI, and color temperature options. These aspects can all impact your lighting experience.

Wattage indicates the amount of power consumed by the bulb while lumens indicate the total amount of light emitted. In other words, lumens indicate brightness, not watts.

The color temperature, measured in Kelvins (K) indicates the color of the light. They often range on a scale from 1000K to 10000K. Common color temperature range from a soft white 2700K to a cool 5000K.

CRI stands for Color Rendering Index It measures the ability of an artificial white light source to accurately render the colors of an object in comparison to natural light. CRI ranges on a scale of 0-100. CRI ratings from 90-100 are often considered excellent and work well in spaces like art galleries which require high color rendering.
