Explosion proof electric unit heaters function in hazardous environments with risk of fire or explosion. Harmful environments such as a chemical storage-handling area or an oil refinery and rig can cause injury due to the presence of flammable gases, vapors, or other hazardous substances.

• Class I, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups C and D - where the presence of flammable gases or vapors may occur
• Class II, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups E (optional), F and G - where the presence of combustible dust may occur
• Class I, Zones 1 and 2, Group IIB - where presence of ignitable concentrations of gases, vapors, and mists may occur
• Temperature code T3C - 320 degrees Fahrenheit, 160 degrees Celsius

These locations may include environments such as compressor stations, aircraft hangar/service areas, grain elevators, and chemical storage-handling areas.
