What is an Air Handling Unit?
An air handling unit (AHU) is a large metal box that connects to the ductwork of a building. AHUs are best for filtering and circulating indoor air in a building. Air handling units are normally found on roofs. The unit typically has components that consist of:
- Air filters: Trap dust particles and debris that is in the air. It can also remove pollen, bacteria, and other allergens.
- Blowers: Fan that pushes air through the ductwork into rooms and other spaces.
- Housing: Insulated enclosure of the AHU.
- Cooling Coil: Cools and dehumidifies the air. Can be either a cold water or refrigerant cooling coil.
- Heating Coil: Heats the air in the AHU. Can either be a hot water or refrigerant heating coil.
- Dampers: Regulates the air that enters and leaves the AHU.
- Condensate Drain: Collects water that drips from the cooling coil and then moves the water out of the house.
What does a condenser do?
Condensers work by pumping hot refrigerant gas and cooling it by using fans that remove heat. Once the refrigerant cools, the condenser converts the refrigerant into a liquid form and sends its liquid form to the indoor unit. This process repeats during operation, ensuring that cooled air continues to move to indoor areas.
