What is a battery terminal?

A battery terminal sits at the end of each side of a battery which connects a load or charger to a single-cell or multiple-cell battery and contains a positive end, the anode, and a negative end, the cathode which collects electrons. You can also call a battery terminal a battery post.

What are the different types of battery terminals?

Stud top terminals work best in environments subject to severe vibration at high frequencies. The two types include screw driver operated or nut driver operated, while other types of terminals include lug terminal, auto post terminal (most common in cars), marine terminal (typically used for boats), and a button terminal. Some terminals combine types, such as the AT terminal, which combines the stud type and the auto post. Make sure you know what type of terminals your battery contains.

How can I convert a side post to a top post?

If you work with a side-post battery, you would not be able to use applications designed for a top post, but a post converter solves this problem by allowing you to replace the terminals with the converter. Make sure to use the correct positive and negative ends while converting.

What is the AWG size?

American Wire Gauge-AWG indicates the U.S. standard measure for wire size, measuring the wire thickness and sum of the cross-sectional areas of the strands. A higher awg number indicates a smaller wire diameter. It only measures wires that are solid conductors of electricity, such as copper wire. Make sure you know your wire gauge sizes before you get any parts for your battery. Note that due to the gaps in the strands, a stranded wire measures at a slightly larger diameter than a solid wire with the same AWG, so to find the AWG of a stranded wire, measure the diameter and the number of strands.

How can I prevent my battery from corroding?

Corrosion poses a threat to batteries, but you can easily prevent this by using an anti-corrosion ring, an optional tool that can save your battery in the long run and costs very little money and time to apply.
