What is a wiring trough?

A wiring trough, sometimes called an electrical trough, wire trough, or gutter, functions as a type of wireway. They help protect cables against environmental contaminants such as dirt, dust, oil, and moisture.

Wireways and wire troughs should be used in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).

What NEMA ratings do E-Box wiring troughs have?

Electrical troughs feature different NEMA ratings depending on the type and can determine where you can use them. Though NEMA ratings range from Type 1 up to Type 13, they offer varying degrees of protection, not necessarily in ascending order.

E-Box offers options with a NEMA 3R rating or NEMA 3 & 12.

  • NEMA 3 options offer weather resistance. They protect against windblown dust, falling dirt, snow, sleet, and rain. They also remain undamaged by ice formation on the exterior.
  • NEMA 3R includes all of the protections of a NEMA 3 fixture, but omits protection against windblown dust.
  • NEMA 12 fixtures offer general purpose operation. Designed for indoor use, they provide a degree of protection against dust, falling dirt, and dripping, non-corrosive liquids.
