What is Down Lighting?

Down lighting is using a light fixture that goes into the ceiling to provide downward illumination. They are great to use because they highlight a specific area while also creating zones below. Down lights come with traditional or LED options. They also have different fitting options. These include:

  • Trim – A ring or collar that surrounds the downlight.
  • Trimless – The downlight is not surrounded by the downlight and instead is flush with the ceiling.
  • True Trimless - Helps to recess the light into the ceiling. Removes the visible space between the downlight and the space.

What are the different beam angles for Down Lights?

The three main beam angles for down lights are:

  • Narrow beam angles: Ranges from 15 to 30 degrees and work well in kitchens and other living areas.
  • Medium beam angles: Ranges from 30 to 60 degrees and works well in small hallways and entryways. 40- and 60-degree downlights are the most popular choice on the market.
  • Wide beam angles: Ranges from 60 to 90 degrees and works well for family rooms and large environments.
  • Very wide beam angles: Range from 90 to 120+ degrees and are best used in large-scale corridors, museums, halls and display rooms that require uniform lighting.
