What is the difference between a coal hod and an ash bin?

While both can help with disposing of cooled ashes, they feature different designs.

A coal hod, sometimes called a coal scuttle, coal bucket, or coal pail originally saw use holding a small supply of coal in a convenient location. Now, they commonly see use disposing of cooled ashes from the fireplace or as a decorative accessory. They typically feature a bucket-like shape with a spout. Some options include a shovel.

An ash bin, or ash bucket, resembles a small trash can and, like the coal hod, may come with a shovel. An ash bin can also include a lid. Unlike the coal hod, these options function less as a decorative accessory and more as an easy way to dispose of ashes.

Why do you use andirons?

Fireplace andirons, also called fire dogs, function similarly to a fireplace grate. In an open fire, they lift the fire off the floor of the fireplace, which allows for better airflow and more efficient burning. Elevating the fire allows for increased air flow and reduces the amount of space between the fire and the chimney.

Certain andirons can add a decorative touch to the fireplace as well, like this UniFlame andiron option with a cast iron cat design.

What are fireplace bellows?

A fireplace bellow supplies additional air to keep the fire going. Bellows’ features include two handles which, when pulled apart, cause the inner chamber to pull in air. The bellow stores this air and, when you push the handles back together, it forces the air out through the nozzle. This helps supply additional air to a dying fire to stoke the flames.

Bellows can also function as a decorative piece for your fireplace. UniFlame offers both dark stains, like their 25-in long handle UniFlame bellow or their 15-in bellow which also features a stylish medallion, as well as honey finish options, like this 15-in bellow or this 19-in oversized bellow.

What is a cast iron humidifier used for?

These humidifiers often work with wood-burning stoves. Wood burning stoves and fires decrease the humidity in the room. If the humidity falls too low, it can damage flooring and wallpaper, as well as cause dry skin, lips, throat, and sinuses. Humidifying kettles and steamers add this humidity back into the air.

To use them, fill the kettle with water and place it on the stove to boil. As the water boils, it releases the water vapor back into the air. You can often find kettles and steamers available in cast iron because cast iron handles heat well.
