Can MR16 be replaced with LED?

If you currently use a halogen MR16 and want to upgrade to LED, don’t worry. These days, LEDs are designed to retrofit into many existing light fixtures and it’s likely that you can easily switch from a halogen MR16 up to LED. Typically, you only need to swap out your old bulb for a new, efficient LED version.

However, LEDs use a much lower wattage than many traditional lighting options. If your current lighting setup has a minimum load requirement, then simply swapping to LED may not work. If that’s the case, you will need to remove the old lights and switch them out for ones designed for LED light bulbs. If you use a dimmer switch, you may need to swap one out for a switch compatible with LED lights.

Because of this, always check the load requirement and the transformer rating before purchasing the LEDs to make sure that they can work in the current lighting setup.

Are MR11 and MR16 the same?

No, MR11 and MR16 are not the same thing. MR16 bulbs are bigger in size than MR11. MR stands for multifaceted reflector while the number afterwards indicates the size of the diameter in eighths of an inch. An MR11 bulb measures 11/8, or 1.375 inches, while MR16 measures 16/8, or 2 inches, in diameter.

Because of this, MR11 and MR16 bulbs are not interchangeable. A fixture that requires MR11 is probably too small for an MR16 bulb.

What does MR11 mean on a light bulb?

MR stands for multifaceted reflector. These bulbs include a reflector and focus the light into a singular point. They often see use in track lights and recessed lights, but you can also find them in some landscape lighting fixtures.

The 11 in MR11 tells you how big the diameter of the light bulb is. For an MR11, this measures 11/8, or 1.375 inches.

Are GU4 and MR11 the same?

No, GU4 and MR11 refer to different things. However, they are commonly used together in certain MR11 bulbs. MR refers to the style of bulb, a multifaceted reflector, while the 11 refers to the diameter in eighths of an inch.

A GU4 is a type of light bulb base often found on MR11 bulbs. As a bi-pin base, the GU4 bulb base inserts into the socket using two pins that are spaced about 4mm apart. A GU5.3 bulb has 5.3mm between each pin while a GU10 base has 10mm between each pin.
