What is a sealed battery?
Sealed batteries are a type of lithium or alkaline battery made for smoke detectors, with a lifespan of 10 years. They were designed to prevent issues associated with faulty replaceable batteries, such as malfunctions or delays in smoke detection. Sealed batteries are nonreplaceable, meaning that when the 10-year lifespan is up, you replace the entire smoke detection unit rather than just the battery.
A large benefit of sealed batteries in smoke alarms is the elimination of low battery chirps, which are a common nuisance in homes. Instead, sealed battery smoke alarms give an end-of-life warning, so you know when it is time to replace your device.

Why is my smoke detector beeping?
A smoke detector beeping could indicate a few different things. Sometimes it is clogged with dust or has faulty wiring, but most often your smoke detector beeps because the battery needs to be replaced.
Even if your smoke alarm is hardwired, most devices still have a backup battery in the event of a power surge or power outage. Making sure your smoke detector has a working battery is important for fire safety, so if your alarm is beeping, replace the battery as soon as possible.
Common batteries that smoke detectors use are 9V and AA. Most smoke detectors have instructions on the device itself that indicate what battery it uses. In any case, you can always consult the owner’s manual from your device’s manufacturer to find the battery type.
