How do I use a pipe wrench?

When suing a Ridgid pipe wrench, be sure to center the work piece in the "v" of the hook. If the pipe is not in contact with both sides of the "v," it can reduce wrench gripping action and may result in failure of the hook.

DO NOT

  1. Use the pipe wrench as a hammer
  2. Use if the handle is bent or twisted
  3. Use the incorrect size wrench
  4. Use on hard, square, or hexagonal material
  5. Hit a wrench with a hammer to break loose a fitting
  6. Apply a side load to the handle
  7. Use as a lever, lifting device, or to bend tubing
  8. Use near a flame
  9. Use in conjunction with a power drive, threading machine or any mechanical device to make or break fittings
  10. Modify or alter a pipe wrench

How should I properly maintain my pipe wrenches?

Straight/Rapid Grip/End/Offset/Compound Wrenches:

  • Clean teeth with a wire brush
  • Replace jaws with worn teeth and any other damage
  • Examine the spring assembly and replace if necessary, if the wrench fails to operate
  • To prevent rusting, keep non painted parts well lubricated with oil and store in a dry place

Chain Wrenches:

  • Clean jaw teeth with a wire brush
  • Replace jaw teeth if worn or damaged
  • Inspect the chain links for separation or any other damage. Any sign of damage is an indication they should be replaced
  • To prevent rusting, keep chain and jaw well lubricated with oil and store in a dry place

Strap Wrenches:

  • Inspect the strap. Any sign of frays, cuts, or damages will indicate it should be replaced
  • Replace the strap if the wrench slips due to grease, oil, or other dirt being entangled in the pipe wrench
