How big of a ceiling fan do I need?

How big your ceiling fan is depends on the square footage of the room it will occupy. Below are the recommendations for ceiling fan diameter:

  • Rooms up to 100 square feet: 29-36 inches
  • Rooms up to 400 square feet: 36-50 inches
  • Rooms over 400 square feet: 50-71 inches

It is important to correctly measure the size of the room before purchasing a ceiling fan. Fans that are too small will not perform adequately.

How do you fix a ceiling fan chain?

To fix a ceiling fan pull chain, you will some tools and equipment.

Tools and materials

  • 6-foot step ladder
  • Voltage Tester
  • Wire Stripper
  • Manual Screwdriver
  • Pull chain extender or pull chain switch kit
  • Electrical wire nuts

Once you have all the materials, you can start on fixing the pull chain.

  • First, assess whether the repair is external or internal. External means the break was out of the fan and in the middle of the chain. Internal means the chain broke off in the fan housing.
  • Then, turn the circuit breaker off to the room you are working in. Take the ceiling fan base off and remove any lights bulbs from the ceiling.
  • After removing the fan base, unscrew the metal collar that the ceiling chain goes through.
  • Once the metal collar is off, pull the chain switch out. Carefully pull the chain switch down so it does not break.
  • Cut the wires attached to the ceiling fan chain switch. Use wire strippers making sure to leave at least two inches of wire.
  • After cutting the wires, twist together the new pull switch to the fan’s wires. Then, place a plastic wire nut over them.
  • Thread the pull chain through the hole and place the fan base back on the fan.
  • Once the fan base is on, test to see if the pull chain works. If it does, your work is complete. If it does not, go back through each step and try again.
