How to size a ceiling fan?

There are important steps you need to take when sizing a ceiling fan. Below are the steps we recommend when sizing your ceiling fan.

  1. Measure the length and width of the room
    • By measuring the length and width, you can find the square footage of the room.
  2. After measuring the ceiling, use a ceiling fan chart to find the fan that would go perfect with your room. Most general guidelines have smaller rooms using 29–36-inch fans and larger fans using 60-inch fans or larger.

When purchasing a ceiling fan the size of the room are not the only things to consider. You should also consider the style of the fan, your lighting needs, and even control options associated with the fan.

How are ceiling fans measured?

Fans are measured by finding their diameter. However, the blade count matters when measuring the fan.

An odd number of blades requires you to measure the tip of the blade to the middle of the ceiling fan. This is also known as the radius. Once the radius is found, multiply it by two.

An even number of blades requires you to measure the tip of the blade to the opposing blade. This will give the diameter of the blade in inches.
