How to reverse ceiling fan?

Before reversing a ceiling fan’s direction, decide whether you need to change it or not. If you do need to reverse the ceiling fan, follow the steps below:

  • First, turn off the ceiling fan and wait for the ceiling blades to come to a complete stop. Most conventional fans have a switch. Modern fans, on the other hand, have remote controls to reverse the blade's direction.
  • Fans with head switch

    • Most conventional fans have a switch on the housing of the fan. It can typically be found near the pull string.
    • Flip the switch to the opposite side.
    • Once the switch is flipped, turn the fan back on and see if the fan direction changed.

Fans using a remote or app controller

    • Modern fans typically use remote or app controllers to change the blade direction.
    • Push the button on the remote or app controller.
    • After pushing the button to reverse the blade direction, turn the fan back on to check the fan still works and is going in the right direction.
  • Then, find the switch on the fan base. Check the housing assembly for the reverse switch. Some fans will have remote controls that with a button to reverse the blades.
  • After finding the switch or button, flip or push it to reverse the direction of the fan.
