How to install a ceiling fan with existing wiring?
Installing a ceiling fan with existing wiring is straight forward. However, we recommend hiring a licensed electrician to install the fan with the existing wires. Below are the steps to connect the ceiling fan to the existing wiring.
- Turn off the power to the fan at the power breaker.
- Check if the junction box is code rated for ceiling fan use. If it is for ceiling fan use, you can continue with the installation. If it is not, you will need to replace it with one that is.
- Thread the existing wire from the wall through the new mounting bracket. Then, screw the mounting bracket into the junction box.
- Take the downrod and run the wires from the new ceiling fan through it. Twist the downrod into the fan’s base and screw it in as well.
- Once the downrod is in the base, attach the top of the downrod to the mounting bracket on the ceiling.
- Now that the downrod is attached, connect the corresponding wires from the fan to the wall. Match the green wire with the ground wire. Then, match the black wire to the black wire from the wall and the white wire to the wire from the wall.
- After the wires are connected, attach the blades and bulbs to the fan.
- Turn the power back on at the breaker and test to see if the ceiling fan is working.
