What size ceiling fan do I need?

The size of the ceiling fan depends on the location of the place where it will be placed. Larger rooms need larger fans while smaller rooms need smaller ones.

100 Square Foot Room: Ceiling fans ranging from 30 to 48 inches are great for these rooms. Ceiling fans work best in home offices and laundry rooms.

400 Square Foot Room: Ceiling fans ranging from 48 to 54 inches are the ideal choice for these spaces. Place them in living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens.

Over 400 Square Foot Room: Ceiling fans larger than 56 inches are the best option for this space. If you have a lot of open space or a loft, you can always place these ceiling fans there.

How to install a ceiling fan?

Before doing the DIY installation yourself, we recommend hiring a licensed electrician to handle the installation for you. They are more likely to know where the wiring and materials are going.

Before doing the installation, the electrician will need to gather all the necessary materials and tools. These materials include:

  • Ceiling Fan
  • Ceiling Fan Mounting Kit
  • Electrical Tape
  • Wire Nuts
  • Ceiling Fan Electrical box
  • Down rod Extender
  • Light Kit

The tools include:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Ladder
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Pliers
  • Wire Cutters/Strippers

Once the materials are gathered, the electrician can start the installation.

  1. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Switch the circuit to the “OFF” position
  2. Check the junction box to see if it is rated for ceiling fans. If the junction box is rated for ceiling fans, continue the installation. If not, replace the junction box with a fan-rated one.
  3. Mount the bracket to the ceiling. Pull the wires through the bracket.
  4. Adjust the down rod. Place the base on the down rod and run the main wires through it. Then, ensure the down rod is secure with the base of the ceiling fan.
  5. Wire the ceiling fan. Connect the corresponding wires together. Once they are connected, push them in the junction box. Cover them with the mounting bracket and tighten the screws.
  6. Attach the fan blades and light bulbs. Once these are fully attached, turn the circuit breaker on. Then, test to see if the fan works by turning the switch in the room on. If it works, then the installation is complete.
