Before adding a ceiling, we recommend hiring a licensed electrician. We at HomElectrical do not encourage installing wiring if you are not licensed in it.

Below are the steps a hired licensed electrician takes to add a ceiling fan.

1. Turn off the power to the circuit that connects to the room. This is done by flipping the switch to the breaker that controls the room. Never complete any electrical work when there is an active circuit.
2. Find the best position for the ceiling fan. Place the ceiling fan in the center of the room to achieve maximum airflow. Use a tape measure to find the center of the ceiling and then locate joists for the ceiling fan.
• Strong and sturdy joists are recommended because ceiling fans are heavy and can cause damage if not installed correctly.
3. After you find the place where the fan goes, you need to install an electrical box. Install the electrical box into secure ceiling joists. To start the installation, place a mark and cut a hole in the ceiling at the installation point. The installation will depend on how many joists you have.
• One Joist:
• Trace the outline of the box to the drywall
• Push through a fan brace with the electrical box
• Secure the brace to the joists in the wall
• Place the box directly to the joist using nails or screws
• Two Joists
• Locate and mark the joists with a stud finder
• Mark the center point between them
• Trace the outline of the electrical box at the center point
• Cut along the outline with a drywall saw
• Place an insert brace with the electrical box in the ceiling through the opening in the wall
• Put the brace on both joists
• Slide the saddle over the brace and lock it into place
4. Use wire to connect to the fan. Run fish tape through the walls and to where the ceiling fan is.
5. Once the wiring is installed, connect the ceiling fan to the mounting bracket and screw everything into place. Turn the power back on and test to see if the fan is working properly.

To change the ceiling fan direction, first turn off the fan and make sure it is not spinning. This will prevent electrical shocks from occurring.

Then check the fan body or light fixture for the fan switch.

Move the fan switch from one end to the other.

Turn the fan back on and test to see if it is working properly.
