How to oil a ceiling fan?

Due to wear and tear, ceiling fans can wear down and need maintenance work. One of the maintenance checks should be the fan oil reservoir. Over time, the oil can get too low for the best performance. Oiling the ceiling fan is a straightforward task that you can do on your own.

  • To start, read the fan’s owner manual to ensure the fan requires oil. If the fan does require oil, the manual will tell you how to oil the fan and the specific oil levels.
  • After reading the manual, turn the power off to the fan and grab a step ladder to help you check the oil.
  • As you are inspecting the fan, find the fan’s oil hole. It is a small hole that is typically at the top of the motor. It usually is labeled “oil hole.”
  • Once you find the hole, insert a pipe cleaner into the oil hole. By doing this, you can test the oil levels.
    • If the pipe cleaner has oil on it, then it does not need oil and there could be something else wrong with the fan. If the pipe cleaner does not have oil on it, then you should add oil to the fan.
  • Make sure that you have the proper oil to put in the fan. Non detergent electric motor oil is recommended for ceiling fans.
  • Wipe off any dust or debris that has accumulated on the oil hole or fan. This helps to prevent dirt from clogging the oil hole.
  • When you're done cleaning, slowly pour the oil into the oil hole. Check how much oil is in the fan by using the pipe cleaner. Once the oil touches the pipe cleaner, this will complete the process of filling the fan with oil.
  • Test your fan once you have finished. Check to see if the fan works and if there are any squeaks. The oil helps to run the fan smoother than before.

How do you take down a ceiling fan?

Taking down a ceiling fan can be necessary if it is time to replace it or needs maintenance. If you are needing to take down your ceiling fan, follow the steps below.

  • Figure out which type of ceiling fan you have. You can either have a down rod or flush mounted ceiling fan.
    • Once you identify which ceiling fan you have, turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Test the light switch to make sure the power is out.
  • After turning off the power, remove the lights and globes from the fan.
    • If the lights were recently on, wait a couple of minutes before removing the bulbs and lights.
  • If possible, remove the light kit to access the screws.
    • Remove the screws with a screwdriver and disconnect any wires that run to the light fan.
  • Then, remove the ceiling blades from the fan.
    • Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the fan blade bracket to the fan housing. Repeat this step for each blade.
  • Depending on the fan, remove either the metal cover from the down rod fan or the fan body of a flush mount fan.
  • Once the fan body or metal cover is removed, remove the mounting bracket from the wall.
    • Remove the screws from the electrical or junction box.

This concludes the process of taking down a ceiling fan.
