What is the purpose of a reflector, and do I need one as a high bay/low bay accessory?

The primary function of a reflector is to redirect or “reflect” light into areas that need better lighting or to fix cast shadows. They can be used in high bay and low bay light fixtures to replace metal halides and help bring more light into a space. Learn more about bay lights here: What is a Bay Light?

When would I use an acrylic reflector or an aluminum reflector?

An acrylic reflector is used for enclosed low bay and high bay light fixtures but are not recommended for areas where direct contact is a possibility, such as gymnasiums. An aluminum reflector is used for low bay and high bay fixtures used in a variety of different settings typically found in areas that may be exposed to weather. They are light weight and more durable than acrylic reflectors and more malleable.

What are the benefits of having a wire guard? Are wire guards necessary?

A wire guard can protect your bulbs from damage, theft, and even shattering. They are commonly used to protect pendant lights from falling to the ground but can also be used to add an industrial aesthetic in some lighting applications.

What is the difference between a wire guard and a milky cover?

A milky cover serves two functions for a lighting fixture. It offers protection for the bulb from direct contact and it changes the color hue of the bulb.  A milky cover slides over the lamp and the color that you see resembles its name, “milky.” A wire guard can protect your bulbs from damage, theft, and even shattering.  They are commonly used to protect string lighting from falling to the ground but can be used to add aesthetic design in some lighting applications.
