Like central systems, mini splits have two main components: an outdoor compressor/condenser, and an indoor air-handling unit or indoor heat pump. Conduit, which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain, all links to the outdoor and indoor units. The Out door unit typically is installed to a large power source such as a 208/230 connection and has a disconnected to shut power off quickly in case of emergencies. Your line set will run refrigerant that condensers the air from the units motor. This is what creates the heat or cooling and is transferred to the indoor unit before it enters the room or rooms.

Outdoor cooling units are built to endure these harsh winter weather conditions, which eliminates the need for a cover. Moisture (water) can freeze the air conditioner's condenser coils, which can cause damage over time. However, there is no way to keep moisture out 100% of the time. However, covering your A/C outdoor condenser will not prevent moisture from Infiltrating the interior of your AC Unit. Probably the biggest argument that can be made for why you should cover your air conditioner in the winter has to do with water. Covering your air conditioner doesn't do a very good job of keeping moisture out of your unit so to keep your A/C running and endure a long life be sure to have regularly scheduled service maintenance by a licensed professional to prevent long term and fatal damage.
