How do wall sconces differ from utility wall lights?

Wall sconces are light fixtures that have a distinct design for decorative purposes and will vary in many structural elements such as shades and finishes.

Nuvo modern wall sconces are intended to be visually appealing and provide aesthetic lighting to indoor or outdoor spaces.

Alternatively, utility wall lights are simpler in appearance, and are designed to be functional rather than decorative.

Nuvo combines these key differences within their wall sconce fixtures by providing different level options for:

  • Maximum Voltage
  • Wattage
  • Lumens
  • Bulb type

Should the direction of light from a wall sconce be up or down?

The direction of light emitted from a wall sconce light is determined by its intended method of installation. Depending on the chosen style, Nuvo wall sconces can be installed to emit light:

  • Only up
  • Only down
  • Up and down

Utilitarian wall sconce lights can be placed upwards or downwards for better usage of light direction within the space.

Contemporary, modern and transitional wall sconces are more decorative in nature and can be installed only upwards or only downwards depending on the structure and base of the model:

  • Nuvo models with E12 and E26 lamp bases are indoor fixtures with either up only or down only installation methods.
  • Nuvo models with connector lamp basesare outdoor fixtures with a versatile up and down installation method.

Some models such as 60-7394 and 60-7508 are unique indoor lighting solutions that can be installed in either an up or down position.

How much light does a wall sconce produce?

The amount of light that your Nuvo wall sconce will produce depends on the type of light source used:

  • LED module wall sconces can produce from a range of 240-1800 lumens depending on the selected type.
  • LED bulb wall sconces have a range of 10-20 watts depending on the selected type.

Additionally, the material of the lamp shade can also determine the amount of light the sconce will produce:

  • Acrylic, Fabric and Glass shades allow for more light to pass through for increased illumination of your space.
  • Aluminum and Metal materials provide more ambient or accent lighting to your space.

How high should I hang my indoor wall sconces?

Lighting experts recommend that an indoor wall sconce be installed above eye level, or 60-77 inches from the floor depending on the room size and ceiling height.

Sconces placed in long hallways should be placed at a minimum of 8 to 10 feet apart to provide an appropriate amount of light to the area.
  • Wall sconces placed in bathrooms are usually hung above the mirror at 75 to 80 inches from the floor in order to minimize shadows.
  • Wall sconces placed in rooms for reading should be placed slightly above the reader’s shoulder in comparison to the type of seating.
  • How do I decorate my space with wall sconces?

In larger spaces, wall sconces are typically installed in pairs on either side of a piece of furniture, fireplace or entryway.

Nuvo wall sconces are priced individually to provide you with customizable purchase amounts depending on the needs of your space.

If you decide to place wall sconces on either side of a door, window frame or mirror, it is recommended to leave at least 6 inches of space between the edge and the fixture.

Sconces that are hung over an art piece should be angled at a minimum of 30 degrees to avoid any glare.

A lighting professional should be consulted to determine the type of bulb, style, and maximum luminance needed for your given space.
