What are LED troffers?

LED troffers are cost-effective alternatives to traditional fluorescent fixtures. They are designed for drop ceilings in commercial and institutional applications such as:
  • Offices
  • Schools
  • Hospitality
  • Healthcare
  • And other commercial and industrial applications
LED troffers feature classic troffer housing with angled sides, while LED panels feature slim profiles with straight sides and edge to edge light.

Troffers usually require a deeper recess for installation while panels are thinner and require less space for installation.

Are LED retrofits and LED troffers the same thing?

LED troffers and LED retrofit kits are not the same, but they can both replace previous lighting fixtures. LED troffers are cost-effective alternatives to traditional fluorescent fixtures. They are designed for drop ceilings in commercial and institutional applications such as offices, schools, hospitality, healthcare, and other commercial and industrial applications.

On the other hand, LED retrofit kits are LED fixtures that feature common lamp bases to allow you to keep your existing fixtures while replacing the fluorescent, metal halide, or HPS bulbs with a high powered LED luminaire. Not only are retrofit kits more cost effective, but they provide an easy way to update outdated lighting fixtures. They are energy efficient alternatives to incandescent bulbs or metal halide bulbs. They feature long life spans and high lumen output with low energy consumption.

Is an LED troffer flat in the ceiling or does it come out?

When looking at LED ceiling lights, it's hard to tell if the lights are LED panels or LED troffers. LED troffers are rectangular light fixtures that are designed for a modular dropped ceiling. They generally require more space for installation but can come in a variety of style options. LED panels, however, are used to replace your existing fluorescent ceiling lights. They require less space due to their slim profile and straight edge. Depending on how much room you have in your ceiling, you will have to see if you can use an LED troffer or need an LED flat panel.

Do LED troffers need a ballast?

No, LED troffers do not need a ballast to operate. Unlike fluorescent lights, LED troffers are installed into a power source and don't need a ballast for power. LED troffers are surface mounted into grid ceilings and use lenses to hold and distribute lighting.
