What is a beam angle?

The beam angle of an LED bulb is the angular dimension of the cone of light from the lamp. It encompasses the central part of the beam out to the angle where the intensity is 50 percent of maximum.

The beam angle of an LED bulb

For most household ceiling-fitted applications, a beam angle of 30 or 40 degrees would be sufficient. For outdoor applications, a wider beam angle of 60 to 120 degrees is preferred to cover a larger surface area.

What color temperature do I need?

  • 2700K - 3000K – provides an ambient, intimate, and personal mood with its warm white light that is ideal for living rooms, family rooms, and hospitality environments.
  • 3500K - 4100K – provides a clean and efficient neutral white light that is ideal for kitchen, bath, garage, or commercial applications.

What is LED Specialty Lighting?

Our LED specialty lighting category contains a variety of LED bulbs that are ideal for specialty lighting situations including:

  • LED Pancake bulbs feature an innovative optical design that produces ambient back lighting to fill out decorative glass and shades. The pancake bulbs are five inches in diameter and ideal for decorative fixtures.
  • LED post top lamps are designed to replace metal halide and high-pressure sodium lamps. They are called post top lamps because they are ideal for installation in a fully enclosed pole top, shoe box, and typical HID fixtures. Our LED post top bulbs are ideal for replacing traditional high pressure sodium and metal halide sources in enclosed lighting fixtures.
  • An LED puck light module is a round light fixture that is often used to light the inside of cabinets or as under cabinet task lighting. The puck bulb is a uniquely compact LED light source that is well suited for enclosed fixtures such as closet lights, ceiling fans, and outdoor porch lights.
  • An eclipse bulb is a unique circular shaped LED light source that can be used in a wide variety of applications. Eclipse is an ideal lighting solution for residential, commercial, retail, and hospitality applications.
  • LED corn light bulbs are aptly named, because they resemble an ear of corn. These bulbs are ideal for table lamps, floor lamps, and wall sconces.

Are all decorative bulbs clear?

No. LED decorative bulbs come in a variety of options for your lighting needs:

  • Clear/Transparent: Clear decorative LED bulbs allow the light to shine through. These LED bulbs give the feel of an incandescent bulb with LED energy savings.
  • Frosted: These lights emit a soft and diffused light without harsh shadows making them great for illuminating patios and other outdoor areas.
  • Opaque: Similar to frosted bulbs, opaque decorative lights provide a clean and fresh light to any area.

Do I use a decorative bulb or a candelabra bulb for my chandelier?

To determine which light bulb will fit in your chandelier or any other light fixture, you must examine the bulb's base first. Both candelabra bulbs and LED decorative bulbs will either have a small (E12) or medium (E26) screw-in base. Most household light fixtures, such as lamps, wall sconces, or decorative string light fixtures, will use these two base types. To learn which size base you need check out our Light Bulb Fitting Guide!

What is the average lifespan of an LED bulb?

The average LED light bulb can last up to 34 years! That's the equivalent to about 100,000 hours assuming that the light bulb is on for a total of 8 hours a day, 7 days a week. Traditional light bulbs, such as incandescent light bulbs, generally have a lifespan of only 1,000 hours (1.4 years) before needing to be replaced. Learn how to convert your bulb's lifespan hours to years with our guide!

Where would I use an omnidirectional bulb?

Unlike directional lights, omnidirectional LED bulbs give you a 360° beam angle. These light bulbs are great for lamps and light fixtures that allow full illumination. We wouldn't recommend using omnidirectional bulbs in recessed lighting fixtures because most of the light would be trapped in the ceiling. These light bulbs are ideal for floor lamps, table lamps, and wall sconces.
