What are the amperage ratings of single outlets?

A single receptacle is a single contact device with no other contact devices on the same branch circuit. If a single receptacle is installed on a branch circuit, it should have an amperage rating less than that of the circuit.

  • One single outlet: Must use a 20A receptacle on a single branch circuit
  • More than one single outlet: Can use either 15A or 20A receptacles on a branch circuit.
  • One duplex outlet: Can use either a 15A or 20A receptacle on a single branch circuit
  • More than one duplex outlet: Can use either 15A or 20A receptacles on a branch circuit.
  • Single and duplex outlets: Can use either 15A or 20A receptacles on a branch circuit.

Which side do the wires go in an outlet?

Our electrical outlets feature both side and back wiring for easy installation.

  • Side Wiring: To side wire an electrical outlet, the wire is stripped, looped around the side screw and tightened down on the wire. This installation method is secure, reliable, and a widely used technique.
  • Back Wiring: To back wire an electrical receptacle, the outlet could use a flat spring clamp to capture a 14-gauge wire which is pushed in from the back. Another method uses the screw-and-clamp to insert a 10-14 gauge wire in the back of the outlet. This method is not the most reliable.

How do I tell the difference between a 120V and 220V receptacle?

Unlike 120V outlets that have two vertical slots, 220V outlets have two horizontal slots. 220V receptacles are most commonly used to connect larger appliances, such as AC units, large power tools, and dryers.

What is the difference between a 15A and 20A single receptacle?

A single receptacle is a single contact device with no other contact device on the same mounting yoke (structural frame of an outlet or switch; often metal, with holes for two mounting screws).

  • 15A single outlet can be used on a small appliance branch circuit as long as there is more than one outlet on the circuit.
  • 20A single outlet can be used on the small appliance branch circuit with another receptacle, and MUST be used if it is the only receptacle on the circuit.
