What is a Spark Lighter used for?

A spark lighter, also called a flint lighter or a flint spark lighter, is a type of lighter that is used to safely light a gaseous fuel to start a flame.

  • These kinds of lighters are ideal for lighting bunsen burners and oxyacetylene welding torches.
  • A spark lighter works by rapidly rubbing a small piece of ferrocerium, a man-made metallic material that gives off hot sparks, upon the sharp edge of any item that is harder than the rod.
  • Spark lighters resist rust and corrosion in order to withstand extreme working conditions.

How do spark igniters work?

A spark lighter uses the principle of piezoelectricity. This is when a small hammer like device is spring loaded in the igniter so that when it hits a piece of quartz crystal. When this crystal becomes deformed it is able to produce an electrical discharge which in turn is able to ignite the gas and create a flame.
